About Six Flowers
Based on a true story, Six Flowers follows the soul-searching and whimsical journey of a young third culture kid (TCK) discovering her roots in Japan as she examines the notion of ‘home’ in its various forms. Through loss and love the meaning of life is starkly redefined for Hitomi, a Japanese American traveling between her family’s hometown in Minnesota and her ancestral hometown, Kumamoto. Navigating both worlds over a period of several years, she matures into a culturally-fluid “third culture adult.”
In six parts, this novel follows a young woman’s process of assimilation and the blossoming of her transnational relationships in Japan and America while an enduring love grows between her and a local man. Each encounter leads to the next as she unravels her family’s history and walks down the path she was meant to travel.
Unfolding like a dream, the scenes of the novel draw nostalgic images of Japan, the familiar feeling of TCK displacement, and the fragility of falling in love across cultural borders.
Available on Kindle and paperback with a Japanese translation to come in 2020.
